Exciting sprinter Barakey is the star attraction at the Northam Racing Club’s opening meeting of the season.
Barakey, WA racing’s rising superstar, will attempt to maintain his unbeaten status in the Listed Northam Stakes (1100m).
The Key Business gelding, a dominant $1.18 favourite on Player, has yet to suffer defeat in seven career starts to date.
He debuted at Belmont Park almost 12 months back and last appeared at Ascot three weeks ago, his first run back from a spell.
Trainer Jim Taylor, in an ominous sign to rivals, said Barakey will strip even fitter for Sunday’s $100,000 feature.
“He’s much fitter now,” said Taylor.
“He pulled up a bit big in condition the other day and you don’t realise until he has a decent hit out.
“In trials and track work he does things so easily.
“But he has come on very well since then.”
Barakey, on the minimum with 54kg, will jump from barrier four for jockey Jason Brown.
The Northam Stakes is race seven on the eight event card and will commence at 4:25pm.
