First season trainer Trent Brown is out to create his own piece of family racing history at Kalgoorlie on Sunday.
Brown’s father, Rickie, prepared Silver Tongue to win the 1993 Kalgoorlie Cup while his uncle, Rob, trained Pomme D’Or to a Boulder Cup victory in 1972.
Brown can add his name to the family honour roll and repel the Perth invasion in the $110,000 Listed Goldline Distributors-Boulder Cup (1760m).
The young horseman will pin his faith with consistent seven-year-old Black Tycoon, racing in career-best form and stable newcomer Big Ted.
And despite their underdog status Brown believes both runners are capable of playing a part in the finish, particularly Black Tycoon.
The Blackfriars gelding has finished top two in each of his past six outings including a last-start second to Big Josh in the Tattersall’s Cup (2300m), when beaten a length.
“This is the race we have set him for and it’s his grand final,” said Brown.
“It won’t be easy but he has done everything I could have asked of him this campaign.
“Amelias Dancer and Belora are obviously the ones to beat after finishing one-two in the Coolgardie Cup (1600m).
“But I think it’s pretty even after that and don’t discount Big Ted who can improve on his first up run in the Coolgardie Cup.
“He will likely lead and if they undercook it he could give them something to chase.
“If they overcook it you can expect to see Black Tycoon coming over the top of them.”
Co-trainer Dion Luciani believes Amelias Dancer’s preparation for the Boulder Cup is far superior to last year when fourth to Reverend Lovejoy.
“He went into the race a tired horse after an eight start campaign and it was more of an afterthought,” said Luciani.
“Nevertheless he still did a great job to run the race right out.
“The Boulder Cup will be his fourth start this time in and I would like to think he has a strong winning chance.”
Luciani said Amelias Dancer was likely to contest the Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) on September 22 if the gelding won the Boulder Cup.
The $100,000 Bucks Off Liquor Triple Nugget is awarded to the winner of the Coolgardie, Boulder and Kalgoorlie Cups in the one season.
“The Kalgoorlie Cup wasn’t part of our original plan but it’s a pretty big carrot to be dangling in front of you,” said Luciani.
Signpost (1992) and Lawmaker (2002) are the only runners to have achieved the milestone.
