Zip Code looms as the horse to beat in the $20,000 Just Roofing Sprint (1300m) at Broome on Saturday; particularly if he can repeat last week’s performance.
The Kristy Casey-trained gelding produced an eye-catching run when he dominated rivals including Double Swirl by an emphatic five lengths.
Ridden by Willy Arnold, Zip Code bounded to the front and dictated terms before drawing away to win convincingly with 59.5kg on his back.
It followed a narrow second at his previous appearance when he showed his versatility with a late dash from the rear of the field.
The six-year-old rises to a 73 + rating race and has copped barrier six in the field of nine, but drops 4.5kg for Arnold who retains the ride.
Casey will also saddle Prince Of Silk who is not without claims on recent form.
The Flying Spur gelding has finished no further back than fourth in four starts this preparation and was involved in a tight tussle last week.
Prince Of Silk, ridden by Colin Haddon, was doing his best work late after a slow beginning and chased hard before running third, a half-length from Satan’s Playground.
Prince Of Silk, who enjoys a track record of two wins and five placings from 10 starts, has drawn well in gate two for apprentice jockey Ellie Cockram.
“I have a slight leaning towards Zip Code on the strength of his win last week,” said Casey.
“But don’t discount Prince Of Silk who has a terrific record at the journey.
“They are both going very well and I go into the race confident I have two horses in good form and capable of winning the race.”
Last year’s winner Ibsen, from the Gary Gulberti yard, is always a chance but is burdened with the top weight of 60kg.
Stable mate Lie In Wait ran competitive races in Perth and will be improved by his first up fourth to Giftofthegav.
Gulberti will have high hopes with consistent galloper Tawakoni, a winner at his past two outings, in the Roebuck Bay Hotel-Kimberley Cup (2020m).
The Encosta De Lago seven-year-old has produced barnstorming finishes and looks the main danger to Marseillaise, who is flying for trainer Tom Pike.
The former Darwin galloper, one of the surprise packets of the Broome season, has put together a strike rate of four wins and one second placing from five starts this campaign.
Finishing close behind Marseillaise on two occasions has been Seize Control who is proven at the journey.
The Second Empire six-year-old, prepared by Darryn Pateman, was an easy winner of last year’s Collie Cup over 2000m.
Bohemian Paradise, Central Park, China Causeway and Zuytdorp can figure in the finish with the runs.Zip Code looms as the horse to beat in the $20,000 Just Roofing Sprint (1300m) at Broome on Saturday; particularly if he can repeat last week’s performance.
