The George Daly trained Garance opened her winning account at Belmont Park on Wednesday, when defeating her opponents in the Gamble Aware Stakes (1000m), where she made her return to racing.

The daughter of Surtee is the tenth named foal out of good producing mare Guinevere, the dam of stakes winner Refemme and winners Femme, Femme’s Sister, Homme, Cherchez La Femme, Simontime, Neufchatell and now Garance.

Comeback jockey Chad Davies settled Garance outside the speed which was set by Rue De Marengo, before the duo had a two horse war in the home straight, with Garance gaining the upper hand over the latter stages and holding out the fast finishing Satan On His Head.

It was the first Metropolitan winner for the season for Davies, who has been thrown a chance by George Daly.

“Sometimes in life you have to give someone a bit of a leg up if their trying and I put Chad in that category.” Trainer George Daly said following the victory.

Debutant Satan On His Head worked to the line nicely to finish in second place, while Rue De Marengo battled on fairly well in to hold down third place.

The disappointment of the race was Top Stuff, who never gave a yelp in the home running and knocked up finishing second last.
