It’s been a sharp rise for Meryl Hayley’s I’m A Flash Unit, who enters this Saturday’s 1000m Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap at Belmont with confidence and momentum, after a near on flawless four start career.

Drawn ideally from barrier three, this will be the toughest test for the humbly bred gelding from Danbird, who has only suffered the one career defeat. Coming into this at his third start this preparation, Hayley suggested this will be his last run before returning later in the year.

“This will be a great test for him, we think he can handle the step up,” said Hayley.

“We think he’ll return a really nice horse and if that’s going to be the case, he’ll need to match it with these.”

As often with very talented horses they are flexible with their racing patterns and for I’m A Flash Unit this was indentified plainly with his exciting last start win from the second half of the field, in what was a masterful ride by Lisa Staples.

“He won his maiden sitting near to last, but we’ve since drawn poorly so had no other option but to press forward,” Said Hayley.

“We identified the hot speed in his last start and decided to drop him back and it looks the same this Saturday. We’ve finally drawn well so we can sit off the likes of You Will Be Queen and Park Lane and hopefully be within striking distance.”

Blessed with 54.0kg and likely to camp just off the speed, this looks like the ideal race for the gelding and connections to exit this campaign with the faith he can return with a fresh set of challenges fit for his untapped potential.

I’m A Flash Unit races this Saturday in the Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap at 1:20pm at Belmont Racecourse, covered on TAB Radio and Sky Racing.
