WA’s most popular racehorses, Luckygray, looked bold in his and fit in his exercise lap of Ascot racecourse after the third race yesterday, January 16.

The grey flash ran his last 800m in 48.2 secs and the last 200m 11.02 secs.

Luckygray looked relaxed after his run but it looked as if Shaun O’Donnell and trainer Gino Poletti were lathered up in the hot conditions.

Watching Poletti cool his talented charge down was a study of intense work in action.

“He’s exactly where I want him to be three weeks from racing. He will definitely start in the Newmarket at Flemington (on March 9) and he may also have another run in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 22.”

“He and Barakey, will fly out on Monday evening to Victoria,” the trainer said.

It may have only been a warm up but O’Donnell was sweating profusely after the ride and could have done with the misters on him. “He is spot on and it is all systems go” the jockey said.

O’Donnell was later ‘hosed down’ in the stewards room after the fourth race.

He copped a suspension, on Dreamaway, when stewards held him responsible for causing Huegill (Shaun Meeres) to be tightened and checked near the 50m of the Magic Million Detonator Stakes.

O’Donnell will resume race riding on March 6.
