Luckygray scored an easy three and a half-length victory in the $125,000 weight-for-age Gr3 Roma Cup (1200m) at Belmont Park on Saturday.
Coming from the back of the field, he swamped his rivals in impressive fashion, running the final 600 metres in a scintillating 33.42 seconds.
Luckygray defeated Our Ol’ Fella and Grand Nirvana and was ridden by Shaun O’Donnell for trainer Gino Poletti and his owners R F Drage, T Maver and B R Mitchell. He was having just his 11th race day outing and has now won eight times and collected $970,975 for his connections.
The win was Luckygray’s first start since late last year when he was in top class form taking out the Group 1 Railway Stakes in controversial circumstances and finishing fifth in the Group 1 Kingston Town Stakes.
Luckygray is a four year old gelded son of Bradbury’s Luck from the Mukaddamah mare Damah Lady. He was selected and purchased by Gino Poletti for $46,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Perth Sale when he was sold by the NSW stud Riverslea Farm. To date he is the best to race by his sire Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice-Skating, by At Talaq) who stands at Glenlogan Farm in Queensland.
