It has been a frustrating couple of months for the connections of the 5yo son of Encosta De Lago Maschino.

Renowned for its explosive finish to races, Maschino has fallen short of victory by less than a length in all three starts since resuming – races that included the Northerly and Asian Beau Stakes.

Seriously overdue of a victory, it was only going to be a matter of time until it all came together for Maschino ($3.40 fav) and trainer Graham Yuill, and today was the day, with a slashing win in the Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes 1500m.

With regular hoop Kyra Yuill still recovering from that horrific fall witnessed in early September, it was left to replacement jockey Jarrod Noske to pilot the stable star. Settling towards the rear of the field early in proceedings, Iseethingsyoudon’t ($7.00) and Mega Steel ($21.00) were left to contend for the lead upon barrier rise. It was a cracking pace set by the frontrunners, the electric speed suiting Maschino to a tee. Swinging for home, Maschino was set alight by Noske – his mount storming down the middle of the track with effortless ease to salute by a length.

Niblick ($8.50) stayed on well for second, with McScar also finishing off well a further ¼ length away in third.

Next week’s Group 1 Railway Stakes is the next assignment for Team Yuill and Maschino where it will meet the likes of Luckygray and Ranger. A similar run race should see Maschino right in the mix.
