Cavallo Pazzo and former Apprentice of the Year Kyra Yuill partnered together for the third time Saturday to claim the $80,000 Listed Belmont Newmarket 1200m.

Yuill picked up the prize ride following the suspension of regular hoop Peter Knuckey, and made the most of the opportunity. Settling her mount sixth in transit, Yuill sent Cavallo Pazzo ($6.00) forward entering the final 300m to surge away from the field for a stunning 1 ¼ length victory.

Gum Nut Guru ($19.00) performed above expectation to grind away for second, with the Albany trained Our Ol’ Fella ($6.00) a further half-length away in third.

Fancied pair Latoria ($2.60 fav) and Werd ($6.50) were both sent out fast early, ensuring a cracking pace to the Belmont feature. Both faded entering the straight, with Latoria beating only one other horse home in what was a very uncharacteristic run.

Cavallo Pazzo had been freshed up after finishing third behind WAROA Horse of the Year Luckygray in the Belmont Sprint (1400m) in early June, and will now be set for the Goodwood Sprint (1300m) in a fortnight’s time before heading towards the Hannan’s Handicap (1400m) in Kalgoorlie on September 19.
