Local three year sprinters were put on notice at Belmont today, with another dazzling performance handed out by the Ross and Clint Price trained Smoko in the Tabtouch.mobi Sprint 1000m.

The Bunbury trainers knew that had something special with their Snitzel gelding, after murdering a RST1 field over the distance on debut. It wasn’t only the four length margin that stood out, or the slick time of 56.94 seconds recorded, but both minor placegetters in that race went on to dominant victories in the their next respective outings – sounding the arrival of a possible new star for WA racing.

William Pike took the ride today, and shot Smoko ($1.28 fav) across from barrier seven early in proceedings to take up the lead – and that was that. Second elect War Prince ($6.50) tried to go with the favourite, but to no avail. Pike hadn’t touched his mount, and swinging the turn put paid to War Prince in a breath – breaking the collective backs of 3yo rivals as it coasted to the line for an untouched 4 ¾ length hiding in the smart time of 57.89 seconds. Amber’s Hero ($26.00) and Zenergy ($19.00) finished off their races well to claim third and fourth respectively.

With reinforced confidence from today’s run, team Price look set for a bright Ascot summer carnival with their undefeated stable star.
