WA Hoon Laws were ignored at Belmont today, with the Michael Lane trained Spin Da Wheels burning rubber to salute in the 2yo Westspeed Nursery HCP 1000m.

Backing up from two impressive runs over 1400m in midweek company, punters were not convinced the Hard Spun gelding would be competitive over the five furlong trip – with large investments laid on debutant Academy Beau ($4.40 fav), and serial second placegetter King Closet ($5.00).

Jumping with the field from barrier eight, apprentice jockey Alex Hearn found early cover with Spin Da Wheels ($7.50) – positioning his mount midfield as Language Flying ($15.00) and Academy Beau took up the running, while Mireille ($10.00) sat behind the leaders in third.

Swinging the bend, Mireille hit the lead as Spin Da Wheels surged wide and came with a thunderous run. As the pair came together inside the final furlong, King Closet put in a last gasp effort in-between horses, but failed to negotiate the momentum of Spin Da Wheels – falling short of a deserved win by a mere short neck. Mireille battled on for third, a further 1 ¼ lengths adrift.

Spin Da Wheels now boasts two wins, together with three minor placing’s from seven career starts, and despite terrorising rivals in today’s event, is unlikely to be impounded for 28 days.
